Rete Mirabile

This word is Latin for “wonderful net.”  It is pronounced –                                      rete mi·ra·bi·le (mĭ-rä’bĭ-lē)

It sounds like a bottle of wine to me….

Rete Mirabile - about birds feet

Actually, this is what keeps duck feet from freezing in cold water.

According to Bird Note, “Rete mirabile is fine, netlike pattern of arteries that interweaves warm blood from a bird’s heart with the veins carrying cold blood from its feet and legs.  This interweaving warms the cold blood in these veins before it reaches the bird’s heart. This system keeps the bird’s legs and feet warm, even without leggings and slippers.”

And what about the tiny songbirds feet?  “This birds’ feet lack sweat glands and stay dry. So, there is no danger of them freezing to metal perches.”

  3. Bummer, this is the second post I’ve gone back to and the comment I posted this morning is gone. I may never comment from my phone again! I love this because you still managed to work the bird into your picture. Something I didn’t say in my original comment is I LOVE the pink!! What a great shade! I see you tagged this Tombow markers, OH I need that color lol! Would you mind telling me what number it is, Jill?

    • Hi Laura! I’ve had that happen with my phone too. Thanks for taking the time to comment a second time. 😊 If you go to my link at Bird Note, there is an audio where the speaker pronounces the word. Kind of fun to hear it. I think I only have a pink and green Tombow! LOL! Need to get more after seeing how much fun you have with them. The pink is 685. Did you buy yours as a set or individually? 🎨

      • I think the WP iPhone app is squirrely! arghy. I did buy mine as a set, and it’s the bright palette. I really like it, but if you’re trying to do birds (I tried doing my Friday bird with one yesterday, and oh what a big bomb that was in the color I chose lol) that’s not the best set. It’s great for fun, though! I think Tombow makes over 100 colors, and I don’t have that one, but I may go chase that one down. Thanks for giving me the number on there, Jill! I’m glad you’re enjoying the Tombows.
