I seem to be thinking a lot about pears lately… so after I ate my one for dinner last night, I went to a local Farmer’s Market and bought 3 more!
I needed to warm-up so I did 3 quick scribbly drawings with a ball-point pen to get the feel of their shape:
Next, I decided to draw a contour of them like I was writing a haiku – with only 5, 7 and 5 lines for each pear shape. I scribbled water-soluble (Neocolor 2) wax pastels in vibrant fall colors:
And softened them with water:
And finished with this written haiku:
Yellow blushing red A juicy ripe pear-fect treat Sweet autumn harvest.
Have a happy day! 🙂
Love seeing the process and the beautiful result. Combine with your delightful words, a real treat. Thank you for sharing this.

love the idea of warming up with scribbles – what a great idea – I find I need to sometimes do that too and didn’t even recognize it was a warm up. Awesome!

I learned this from Carla Sonheim. First, you just scribble all over a piece of paper like a little kid. Then you start scribbling your subject. It is really fun to do and trains your eyes to really SEE your subject. 🙂

Thanks Teresa! I liked how that one turned out for being such a quick study of the fruit. Sometimes simple is good and more satisfying! LOL! 🙂

Jill, they’re the best thing to come into my life since watercolor itself! 😀 I’m a total art geek, I guess, oh well, no new info there. I love your fall-themed artwork! (incidentally I’m trying to put an art quilt together and I’m thinking of you – may make my first one bold and beautiful and full of color – like my colorful friend!

Thanks Charlie! What do you do to warm-up before you start a sketch?

😊 I didn’t know you were supposed to! I just grab my pen and start attacking my Moleskine with it! Lol But I’m thinking now I should try a warm up first to see what happens!

Oh, you don’t have to – I was just wondering if you did? Sometimes I do warm-ups and sometimes I don’t. I guess it depends on my mood. lol
