My magazine collage from yesterday helped me create these drawings today in my art journal:
I mixed up the order from this collage:
I drew my shapes with a black .01 Micron pen and the shaded with pencil. I like to use a blending stump to shade my pencil.
This exercise helps “train” my eyes to draw the shapes I see and not what I think I see. It also helps me learn how to shade my images to give them dimension.
And it gives me new ideas for my doodles!
I found that I liked the simple shapes best! Β What about you? Β I’d love to hear what you think!
Happy Drawing! Β π

I kind of like that ceramic flower…it has a hand-like quality in the drawing. (K)

Jill, this is one of my favorites of yours! I love it and I think it’s a terrific drawing exercise. Your composition is right on and the flower in the top left stands out for me. I think you have a real gift for drawing and painting them. Way to go! And I’m so glad to see you’ve inspired another sketchbook purchase ^^ !!

Thanks Laura for your kind words! I’m glad you like the flower! πΊ I think the one that surprised me the most was the blue image which is from a butterfly wing. π

I agree with Laura – top left stands out to me as well. But I look at the whole page and find it mesmerizing.

Hi Jill, each one is your small drawings could now be drawn larger and be a work of art on its own. Your experimentation is inspiring, keep it coming!

Thanks Sharon! I had not thought of that idea! I was going to try making some of my own stamps with some of the images. Have you ever carved your own stamps from an eraser? π

I have used eraser and linoleum, I liked the effect. But remember you are carving out the negative space. π

Thanks Laura! It is a great way to add dimension. I learned this from creating Zentangles. πππ

Oh I love that idea of the collage and then copying and sketching them! Also, the work with the fine felt pen and then shaded with pencil looks really neat! I once did an exercise in a course where the topic was also to train the eye to draw shapes rather than what you see. The exercise consisted into hanging a picture upside down – that’s then exactly what you start doing, copying shapes instead of what you (try to) see! And then in the end we all had pretty stunning sketches π
