I’m really enjoying Carla Sonheim’s class, “Y is for Yellow!”
The assignment to draw blind contours in my sketchbook was a little scary at first:
We were to draw 5 images from a magazine with a ballpoint pen without looking at our paper! It was OK if the images overlapped. And I kind of like the “collage affect” from it.
Next, I squinted my eyes to see the darker values of my subject and colored them with a dark blue pencil. I used a light blue pencil to highlight the mid values.
Today, I found the assignment a little more fun!
I included some veggies in the mix! 🙂
I recommend you give this exercise a try! It really does train your eyes to SEE your subject! And if anything, it will give you a good laugh – always good on a Monday!
Happy Drawing! 🙂
I think both of these are wonderful and I love the colors you’re using, Jill! Seriously these could become wonderful semi-abstract drawings/paintings. I’m not really into blind contour exercises but I may have to try this! Love the effects you got here! 💜 Have a great week, my friend!

Thanks Laura! I have done these exercises before but not quite like this – like the addition of color. I’m curious why you don’t like to do blind contour drawings? 😄

That’s a good question. Not sure I know the answer. Some approaches connect better with us than others, I guess.

I Hope you like his work…some will say it is an acquired taste. Cincinnati museum has an enormous mural by him, it makes me very happy. And my oldest son has a colleague who once worked with Miro…that makes us cousins ,right? ;o)

It’s been a long time since I did a blind drawing…these are so cool! Once I’m done with my course, I’ll try this. I’m a bit immersed in Emberley drawings right now. 🙂
