Faces and Bookmarks

I’ve been drawing faces of girls in my sketchbook lately as part of an assignment for the online class I’m taking from Carla Sonheim, “Y is for Yellow.”

I started with the hair first for these gaggle of girls:

And I really surprised myself!  These look like REAL people!  LOL!  🙂

The next faces I drew started with the eyes first:

I think all my drawing practice is starting to pay off!  I am starting to enjoy drawing people.

Remember the bookmark that I submitted to Uppercase Magazine at the end of January?

completed wine and cheese

Well, it didn’t get selected for the magazine but it is available for a free download if you subscribe to their free newsletter!  Here is the link if you want to sign up:

It is pretty cool to see my bookmark with all the other 300 bookmarks for the contest –  LOTS of creative people out there!

Happy Drawing and Reading!  🙂

    • Something finally clicked with drawing faces. Maybe because I started with the hair first? Sometimes looking at a subject in a different way can be the solution. Kind of like seeing a weed as beauty in the crack of a wall. 😄 Does this make sense? 🤔 Enjoy my bookmark! And it is super fun to see all the wonderful art that others submitted. 💕🎨👍

  4. And did you find that you liked one approach better than the other?

    • Good question Kathy! I actually liked both approaches for different reasons. Starting with the hair helped me to focus on shape and pay more attention to the placement of features. And starting with the eyes first, helped me to focus on expressing emotion. 😃🎨👍

  10. Great gaggle of faces! I looove drawing portraits. I usually start with a face shape and then place the eyes and go from there. 🙂

Sorry your bookmark didn’t place but it’s a winner to us! ❤

  13. Love the faces! I’m not great with mine but I am happy with what I am able to render now. I am no longer “afraid” of faces! I haven’t tackled the bodies yet but one day…who knows!

  15. Jill love those sketches and the fact you are pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. Im designing some bookmarks at the moment to sell at a local fair and its not as easy as people think trying to use those slim dimensions. I adore your colourful book mark, congratulations on getting it out there.
