A rose speaks of love silently, in a language known only to the heart. – Anonymous
My husband and I recently celebrated our 32nd wedding anniversary. Every year he buys me a bouquet of beautiful roses. I am always very touched by his thoughtfulness. 🙂
This rose I have growing in my yard. I painted it in watercolor last year. I love how the shadows dance on the leaves and petals in this photo. Maybe I will try painting it in acrylics and adding collage to it this year.
It seems kind of complicated to me though so I could use your painterly advice! Thanks friends!
And may you have a Sunny Sunday! 🙂
The only advice I can give is “Go for it!” We have roses blooming now, too, and I’ve been out taking photographs. Earlier I painted one of the yellow ones with watercolor, and I keep saying I want to paint the red ones, so I guess I need to take my own advice and just “go for it.” Roses are so beautiful, I know I can’t do them justice with my limited painting skills. Other than that, the best suggestion I have to offer is doing a small “value sketch” first. That and simplifying the background a bit. I look forward to seeing the finished art. 🙂

Thank you, Judith! I like your idea of doing a value study first. And good idea to simplify the background as I think this is what looks so complicated to me with all those shadows. 😄 I look forward to seeing your red roses painted too! 🎨🌹

I haven’t been happy with my first sketches, so I’ll keep trying!

Hi Jill, thanks…… you kind of know my impressionist style now! lol
Go to the gardens; again.
look, touch, Feel. look at 10+ photos. turn them over! do only 10 second sneak peeks, if needed.
then paint from The Heart!!!!
Paint their essence and spirit. ignore doing a background for this painting.
focus on LIGHT tipped petal, its mid tones, the deep darks at the bottoms. premix up your colors. limit the palette, 3-4 colors.
above get the Tones in sufficiency. 5 tones of light, mid, dark. but 9 is better.
Determine WHO is the “master” i.e. focal point. the rose, or the leaves.
The master Never lets any thing else upstage her. ever.
dear me, this is long ……
probably a good place to peruse might be my Watercolor Basic Tips page….

Happy anniversary and may you have many more filled with love and happiness. The rose you painted last year is lovely, added to the wonderfully creative journey you have been on anything you do now will be just as beautiful…give in to the fun and discovery like you always do.

Happy Anniversary, Jill! 💜💜💜 You are so good with flowers, you don’t need our advice Jill! Love those two paintings from last year. My thought: how about combining the two styles and do a semi-abstract, semi realistic version of the rose? Maybe go a bit wild with color and Jilly it up! We’ll love it, whatever you decide.

Jill, I am so glad you like it! I was thinking that when you are free with color and when you do florals, you are unstoppable. So why not combine the two? Oh, I’d love to see what happens!

Happy Anniversary Jill! We celebrated our 30th this year (January) amazing how fast the years go by. 🙂 I love the glow and colors in your photo, will you be painting it in watercolor….or? I can’t wait to see your progress. At least it is a single rose and you won’t have a bunch of petals…..roses are hard!

Time does fly, I agree Margaret! Congrats on 30 years for you and your hubby! ❤️ I think I may try a value study in watercolor first for fun. But then I’d like to try acrylic and add some of my collage papers. Need to figure out how to simplify the background. 😄🎨🌹
