Do You Remember?

I was recently struggling on how to paint this rose, do you remember?  Well, I decided to take this photo on a cloudy day so I had less shadows:

This helped me to see the STAR of the show – the rose and not the leaves, as Debi Riley so kindly suggested to me.  Thanks Debi!  🙂

I also appreciated the idea from Judith at Artistcoveries to do a value study first.  So I did this with my computer by printing my image in color and then in black and white:

Drawing the rose shape with a black pen on top of the black and white image also helped me see my subject better.

Next, I decided to use a stencil of my rose to create these studies in my turquoise journal that I previously shared with you:image

The rose image on the left is from a stencil like I did here and the image on the right is a gelli-print like I did here.

Today, I started a watercolor painting on Aquabord inspired by Laura at Create Art Everyday who has been experimenting on this surface:

It is only the beginning of my painting but I wanted to share it with you.  I hope to experiment with adding collage too!

I just wanted you to know that I remember ALL your kind comments and encouragement in my art journey!!  🙂

    Wow, nice start Jill! We have an amazing community here and I’m so glad something I posted was helpful to you as well, thanks for the mention as always! I really love the way you went after this. Thanks for breaking it down, because I think your method is a good way to approach a difficult subject like this. But, oh so beautiful and totally worth it! Loving your colors already in that main shape and looking forward to seeing where this goes! Isn’t Aquabord great? Not sure if you’re a rinser like me, but they do not suggest running the boards under a running faucet or submerging them the way I tend to do (oops). They said taking a damp rag or paper towel or even a stiff damp brush or qtip to the surface would be better methods to make any corrections. This bug won’t let go of me but I will post those tips when it does! Rock on, Jill, looking forward to this!

      Thanks Laura! The surface takes a little getting used to with the paint sitting on its surface. I do like the fact that I can remove the paint and fix it though. This bord is 11×14 inches. It takes awhile to dry between layers so I got a lot of cleaning done in between yesterday which is a good thing! Lol! 😉 Sorry to hear you are still feeling a bit under the weather. 🤒⛈☔️ Hope you feel better soon, Laura! Miss your art experiments!! 🎨💕👍

        Thanks, Jill. Wow, 11×14. I can’t even imagine!! Yeah it really does take some getting used to for sure. Is this your first one (sorry I can’t remember)? I love the fixability and I love the fact that the colors stay so much brighter on it because there’s not so much paper for it to disappear away to. Do you ever blow dry it in between? I’ve tried it and seems to work. Although fitting chores in is good I guess too lol.

        Yes, I tried it last year with some birds on a much smaller size. But I had this one so I thought I might as well try it! I found out how to fix the surface too so feel more at ease with using it. 😃 I wasn’t sure about blow drying on this surface so I haven’t tried that yet. Believe me, cleaning my art room was long overdue!! Lol! 😉

        Oh mine looks like a bomb exploded there. I hear ya totally. The surface is textured clay over hardboard. I didn’t ask specifically about a hair dryer but I can’t imagine heat bothering clay? I’ll still do it but all of mine are small (and relatively inexpensive). Not sure when I’ll ever be bold and beautiful like you! And I’m not even young and restless! Well, yes to restless. lol.

        I think I read somewhere that it’s OK to use heat on it. I just saw it as an opportunity to do some cleaning and these feelings don’t happen very often…lol! 😆

    And what a lovely start! Overcast is wonderful for photography. The overhead direct sunlight can be too harsh and cast unsightly shadows. Glad you solved that and got on with your pretty flower painting …

        You have the most wonderful outlook and attitude about it, Jill! ❤ As I explained in today's post, I compulsively answer comments and found that it was just taking up too much time. I like the option of having the "Like" button which lets people leave a "calling card" without having to leave a comment.
