I understand why ART is called a “practice” because some days it takes more “practice” to create a little art…
I was trying to draw and paint a pine cone today but decided I need much MORE practice before I can show you! 😉
I decided on a Nasturtium which I planted as an annual this Spring in a large pot next to a tomato plant. Did you know the flower is edible and has a peppery flavor? It is often added to salads. Here is my sketch next to a photo of the plant:
I wasn’t totally happy with my colors in my sketch. I used watercolor pencils with a limited palette. I hope to paint them again in watercolors – hopefully in a looser style.
I wasn’t going to post my art today but I decided that it is PRACTICE not perfection that is my goal!
Happy Sketching!! 🙂
I like the page you created, especially the very tricky side view. Glad you shared this! I love this useful plant and it is indeed tasty in a mixed salad, you should try it;-)

I think it´s really nice, only the yellow isn´t as bright as it could be. But that´s probably due to the watercolour pencils and not you. 😊 I really like the down left blossom, it´s great! Can´t wait to see your watercolour of it! 🌼🎨🌞

Thank you, Ann. I couldn’t get the colors the way I wanted them and I was running out of daylight. 😉 I can’t wait to try painting it a little looser out of the sketchbook! 💕🎨

I’m so glad you posted Jill. I love Nasturtiums. The leaf and the flower are both so beautiful. They grow well in the desert, too.

Love your nasturtiums! I do like the colours in the flowers, it may not be exactly the same but I think you have caught the way the colours flow through the flower. The side view is so interesting too, aren’t these flowers put together in a fabulously weird way. You are going to love having these flowers in your salads this summer, don’t forget the little seed buds can be pickled and eaten as well like capers.

Thanks Karen! 💕😍 I appreciate your kind words. 💜 I found a recipe on Pinterest that stuffs them with cream cheese, fresh chives, etc. I may give it a try tomorrow at my dinner party. 😊 Oh, and I didn’t know that about the seed buds, sounds delish! ✨👍

Jill thanks for sharing! I particularly like the side view. Great job! I applaud you posting when you weren’t sure – I too have felt like that, but I never regret it. At the least you later see how far you’ve come. More often than not the community gives you some support and you realize it wasn’t so bad after all. 😄

Such a pretty rendition of it, Jill! Hubby grew nasturtiums for a few years but I never quite took to the peppery flavor of it so he stopped growing it. 🙂

You have done very well with this sketch I love nasturtiums they self seed all over my garden and have a habit of overpowering other plants so I have to keep them in check. I do add them to salads too.
