Remember the Nasturtium flowers I drew in my art journal last month? Well, I decided to try painting them loosely in watercolors this week.
I started with painting wet-into-wet on 140 lb cold press paper. You can see it in the photo on the left. It was a cloudy day so perfect weather for painting outside.
I had my trusty helper, Jack, close by:
So I was ready to begin. I tried not to overthink it:
I added a few more details with watercolor:
I couldn’t leave it alone so I added a few color pencil details…
I didn’t like the look of the color pencils so I tried adding some watercolor pencils. But the more I fiddled with it, the more I disliked it. So I decided to give it a rest and come back to it later.
Here is one more photo for you to enjoy. I just love these bright orange flowers!
Wishing you a sunny Sunday and happy painting! 🙂
I love your painting, Jill. The looseness feel of it is very evident of your relaxed weekend. 🙂

One of my fav flowers, and you can eat them, bonus! Lovely painting, captured the erratic growth of the plant, and the vibrant oranges beautifully

Thank you, Rebecca. I felt like I needed a stronger orange. I might go back with some gouache another day. 😄

So pretty! You’ve made a beautiful floral pattern! Oh how I can relate to that feeling of liking something and then going to far, but I think what you painted is so lovely.

I love the colors and the composition. It feels relaxing and has great flow. Maybe if you walk away and come back in a bit you will enjoy it more. I know, I do the same thing. We tend to be our own worst critics! BTW…your Jack looks like he helps the same way my Jack does! 😊

Thanks Nancy for your lovely comments. I think I had envisioned something else in my mind. 😳 Will try the subject again another day! 🎨😃 Jack kept wanting to sit in my lap that day which made it hard to paint! Lol! 😉

Maybe you should have put some paint on his paws and he could have helped. Next time try painting “cat tails” instead and he can help for sure!!😊

Very nice! I love the colors, and the depth you created.
I like the second to the last stage the best. It’s hard to stop fiddling with a painting sometimes I get that.

I’m going back to Bottle and Bottega to paint my second acrylic painting this afternoon!
You saw the first one on my Instagram feed I think. I’ll post the second there too.
What are you doing today? Something fun I hope! 🙂

I think it’s a lovely watercolor and no more “fixing” it. 😊 That’s the thing about water colors- they are unpredictable. Your garden is beautiful too. Kiss your kitty for me. I had a black cat once upon a time. His name was Spooky. Enjoy the rest of your weekend Jill!

Yes, watercolors are that way! Normally, I like unpredictable… I’m more of a paper collage person. 😃 But I think it’s important to stretch myself artistically. Sometimes stretching is uncomfortable. Lol! 😉 Spooky sounds like a great name for a black cat! ❤️
