I have been reading about drawing faces from various sources and decided to try a go at a more “realistic” selfie using my new set of Rembrandt Soft Pastels:
I have only used soft pastels for drawing flowers so this was a bit of a stretch for me!
It helped me to focus on the “shadows” when drawing my face and NOT see it as a face – or MY FACE, eek! Β That’s really scary as I would spend waaay too much time focusing on wrinkles and double chins…
OH, I see I’m digressing! Lol! πΒ Here I am in my red glasses:
So I’m proud of myself for completing this first “REAL” selfie and to posting it here and on Instagram!!
Phew! Β π
Happy Monday!
This looks great Jill. I find pastels so difficult, although I like the results other people get with them…and the colors are so inviting. I love your direct look too. (K)

Thank you Kerfe! π I’m learning a ton! It did help to focus on shadows although pastels are so different in building up layers of color. π¨

That’s great, Jill! Even just glasses are so hard to draw.

Oh, thank you, Jodi! β€ You are so sweet!! π I don’t know why it is so hard to draw myself but I’m hoping I can get over the fear by doing more of these selfies… I want to try them in different art mediums. π©βπ¨

I don’t think I could do myself – I don’t want to look at myself that critically. LOL! Maybe I could just paint an “aura!” π

Nice! It’s scary enough to confront ourselves in the mirror sometimes, let alone draw and share a self portrait. Courageous, warrior artist you are.

Nice work, Jill, Glad to have discovered someone else who likes drawing faces. Keep it up, self portraits are really challenging, I find, but, practice always helps. Curious to hear how you get on with those Rembrants…I have been using Conte pencils for years, but am now branching out into ‘stick’ pastels. I think Rembrants are somewhere in the middle of hard and soft, is that right….I have some super soft Senneliers and I am getting a few Unison, to try, and also some Nupastels.

Thank you Hilda for your comments! π I have much to learn when it comes to pastels. I have the super soft Senneliers too but have not used them yet. I will check out your blog and I’m sure I can learn a lot from you! π¨π

There’s an overwhelming amount of pastel supplies out there, I am sure we can learn from EACH other! π
