Oregano And Chives…

Bet you thought I was going to say, Oregano and Thyme! 😉

I used to have “Thyme” but the Oregano kind of took over… haha 🙂

Oregano and Chives are “perennial herbs” meaning they come back each year.  (Thyme is too but more temperamental where I live).

I decided to try painting them in watercolor on Arches 300 lb cold-press watercolor paper.  I went with the wet-on-wet technique at first:

Painting from my memory, I realized afterwards that I didn’t have the colors quite right!

So I added more watercolor paint… and less water.

More paint made it worse, so I let it rest for a day.

Since I didn’t really like it, I added Posca paint pens:

It still needs more pink but decided to call it a day.

I learned that painting from memory is not as accurate as painting from the real life or a photo.

Do you like to grow Oregano and Chives?  I would love to hear how you cook with them!

Cheers!  🙂

  2. I love both your paintings Jill – they’re wonderful! I love fresh herbs – I grow sage, 2 types of thyme, oregano, lemon balm, mint, rosemary, marjoram and basil!

    • Your herb garden sounds wonderful, Evelyn! I used to have several raised garden beds filled with herbs. One of my favorites is Lemon Thyme and I love fresh basil. Have you ever painting them in watercolor? 🌿🎨

  4. Heheh you are so right, I thought Oregano and Thyme 😉 I liked the way you added texture after wet on wet 👍🏼 I generally use Oregano and Thyme in pasta. Fresh thyme is my one of the key ingredient for Baked Salmon 😋

  5. Pretty painting. Ones memory plays games. Lol. I use fresh chives and dill in scrambled eggs or on baked salmon with lemon.

  11. I love this Jill! I was thinking did you add pens as I was scrolling down and glad to see you did. Also, if we were meant to paint accurately, you might as well just take a photo! 🙂
