Last Friday, I had a little time to create one of Carla Sonheim’s assignments from the year long online class I’m taking from her.
We were to collect some items from nature and arrange them in a pleasing manner:
I collected the above items from my yard. 🙂
Next, I drew them quickly with pencil:
I added oil pastels to my pencil sketch by starting with a light color and layering a darker color on top. I added details by scratching into the oil pastels with a wooden pencil.
I wasn’t totally liking the oil pastels so I scraped white acrylic paint over it:
I like the muted look better… I’d like to try my nature study in watercolor too!
Happy Monday! I hope your day is blossoming into a good week…
Cheers! 🙂
The muted one is my favorite too:-)

Thank you Birgit, I like how the white paint smeared some of the oil pastels too. 😊

Nice work, Jill. I haven’t tried this yet but I did go out and collect materials a couple of nights ago. I think mine will be more abstract when I’m done with it. We’ll see.

Wonderful practice Jill…I like there idea of using the white acrylic to tone down the pastel. Have a good day. 🙂

Hi Sharon, the white paint gave it kind of an antique or old look to it that I liked. 🌿🌼

I thought the oil pastels turned out, UGLY! But I just went with it… I guess not everything I do will turn out looking beautiful! Lol! 🤣😂
I hope to paint it in watercolor this week! 🎨👍

No, it wasn’t ugly. We are our own worst critics.
I hope to paint again this week too. I have some inspiration, and I’m motivated. Something wanes and ebbs with me.

What a fun project! I have never liked oil pastels but your unmuted version looked great I thought. I admire how you keep experimenting though and trying different effects!

Hi Jenna, thank you for your encouraging comments! 😃 Yes, oil pastels can be quite messy…maybe this is why I don’t like them that well. Yet, I love to experiment! 🎨💕
