I started a mixed media class last week with Lendon Noe, hosted by Carla Sonheim. The online class is called, “Inspired by Place.”
I find it an intriguing subject.
Is place a home, perhaps a memory such as a childhood home? Is place a feeling, a sense of calm from being with nature? Or is place from your imagination? There are many other possibilities!
I was inspired to create this collaged landscape of a place I hold dear to my heart in my art journal:
It is a view of Chimney Rock at Priest Lake, Idaho.
I love this place! It holds a special memory where I have been spending my summers since childhood. It brings me a feeling of peace when I see it in person and from photographs such as this one:
And it is a place that I sometimes go in my imagination when I need to relax.
What place inspires you? I hope you share it with me!
Cheers! 🙂
“When you leave a beautiful place, you carry it with you wherever you go.” – Alexandra Stoddard
Paris. Why Paris? Almost forty-five years ago, I spent my junior year of college in Paris, studying French language and literature. Paris serves as a reminder and a symbol to me of the more liberated creative me that I buried for most of my adult life. The last few years I have tried to rekindle that sense of romantic idealism through my exploration of beauty in my life, primarily, though not exclusively, through art and photography.

Wow! Sounds like Paris was a wonderful experience for you, Mike! It is amazing to me how our memories of “a place” can stay with us. I like that you are trying to rekindle that feeling in your life now. 😊
Thank you for sharing this with me!

I’m swept right into your scene with the layers of collage, beautiful Jill. It is amazing what can be done with torn paper.

Hi Sharon, I surprised myself with this collage! ☺️ I used a lot of pages from magazines for the gray tones which I don’t normally do. I am going to make another one with Gelli-printed papers for my husband. He wants one for his office. I think you’d really enjoy this class! Next, I am going to work on a map. 🌿
I was thinking that your grandmother’s place is a place of inspiration for you, is this true? 💗

I think the gel papers will ad another interesting dimension. I’ll check out the class. My grandma was a great influencer in my life. I have her photo albums and wish I knew more about her early life in Los Angeles.

Wonderful collage Jill, and I know exactly what you mean about place, my entire family would agree that the view from our beach house is our favorite thing to see, and brings us peace and joy… I admire you for taking so many art classes!

For me, I think that LA is a place that inspires me. We did a couple of trips to the UK some years ago and each trip we did a 3-day stopover both ways in LA – and visited museums, gardens, industrial areas, walked lots of streets both city and residential, and travelled on metro and bus. We saw and appreciated many things that made a big impression on us and I think those memories have had a lasting influence on us. There are two other places that have had a real connection with us but many more years ago – Venice and Assisi hold a very special place in our hearts and each in their own way inspired us.

So cool! My happy place home-away-from-home is Topsail Island, NC. We have been fortunate to go almost every summer with our kids, even now. What a peaceful, laid-back place to reconnect with each other, and somehow walking the beach makes me feel closer to God. I admire His sandy, watery handiwork!
