Some days (or weekends) life gets busy and it feels like there is no time for art.
This happened to me over the weekend… I’m not exactly sure where the time went! π
Instead of worrying about it, I did some brainstorming in my art journal about what nature is to me:
Brainstorming is a fun exercise. I like to write quickly without judgment. These ideas I can use in my art making when I have a little more time.
Plus it gives me some ideas to think about for my next project.
How do you use brainstorming in your art making?
Cheers! π
A great exercise! I do something a little similar — but quite different, too. I’m learning more about mood and emotion in art, so I like to look at paintings and then jot down notes about what the painting makes me feel. Sometimes I ask “what happens next” in this painting to get a feel for narrative. Then, of course, I try to find ways to capture those same emotions in my own painting. Unfortunately, like you, I haven’t had much art time lately. Inktober has been keeping me busy. I’ve been playing around with colors a bit (using poster paints and newsprint) and I’m looking forward to getting back to my oils. I think doing a lot more brainstorming would be fun, too. Thanks for sharing your art journal!

Hi Judith, I like your ideas! Thank you for sharing them with me. π I like your way of interpreting mood and emotion in paintings. I will have to try this myself. π¨π I have been enjoying your InkOctober art!

This is similar to the prompts from Doodlewash monthly challenges, I think it’s great fun to interpret a word or prompt in an unexpected way, great idea to make your own idea inspiration page!

Hi Jenna, it is similar to the Doodlewash prompts except more personal. It is helping me with my square project this month. Sometimes it is hard to think up new ideas! πΏπ

I’m always writing things down…to be discovered at a later date or lost. but it does plant a seed…(K)

Does it help you with writing your poems, Kerfe? π I have written journals and notes around the house too! Lol! π I did enjoy doing this exercise on one page though, somehow it felt freeing. π

It does. I keep an irregular journal too, and sometimes I just stuff the notes between the pages. Although I can be perplexed at a later date by what I wrote down!

That’s a lot of words. I am amazed that you managed to avoid repetition. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Laura Kate π I was trying not to repeat words. It makes it more challenging. π

Honestly, I haven’t really done brainstorming like this since I was in school but I totally should. It is fun and helpful creatively.

Hi Maranda, it really can be fun when you set your own perimeters! π Sometimes I will set a timer or do mind mapping. It gets the creative juices flowing. π¨π

Nice. Me?…..I have journals all over my abode. When something comes to mind I seize the nearest journal. I don’t know where any words or sketches reside so I frequently pick up one of those little treasure books and something within always speaks and I usually donβt recall entering it.

Hi Gretchen, I also have journals everywhere… π It is fun to read a past entry that you may have forgotten about – especially when it sparks a new direction or idea in art making. π¨π

I think thatβs how I βbrainstormβ too, just pick up the closest notebook and write stuff down. The only problem is when I need to find a certain piece of information I might have to go through multiple notebooks to find it! π

I like your method Jill. I haven’t had much time for making either, but I have been clearing and cooking, and reading. Sometimes life takes over.
