I am taking an online class from Kelly Hoernig called, “Art and Nature in Color Pencil,” at JeanneOliver.com
I purchased Kelly’s book a few years ago. I liked her idea of combining this art medium with collage:
Yet, learning color pencil seemed like a difficult subject to me. It reminded me of watercolor in that you start light and add layers to get deeper values.
Taking an online class is helping me get more comfortable with color pencil:
(YES, I realize it is CRABapple not CRAPapple…) Lol! 😉
It helps me to get feedback from my teacher, Kelly and learn from my classmates.
Writing down the colors I use in my sketchbook creates a guide for future subjects I study further.
I am learning color pencil slowly and hope to add collage soon!
What subject would YOU like to learn more about? I encourage you to take a class!

I have found new JOY with pencil sketching lately.
It has become a relaxing activity in the evening and my day does not feel complete without a quick sketch!
I find myself focusing on faces yet I am also “drawn” to nature.
This woodland fairy combines a face and nature into one sketch:
My inspiration came from the cover of this book and an oak tree in my yard:
It is one of my favorite books for learning to sketch and paint fairies. It has so many wonderful ideas to spark my imagination!
These are the supplies I used for this drawing:
From top of the page to bottom: A Faber-Castell Graphite Aquarelle 8B pencil, Pentel waterbrush, Pentel Graphlet 0.7 mm mechanical pencil, shading stump and a kneaded eraser. I used a Stillman & Birn Zeta Series sketchbook.
I started with the Graphite Aquarelle pencil and added shading with the waterbrush. I finished adding details with the 0.7 mm mechanical pencil and shading stump. A kneaded eraser is wonderful because it doesn’t damage the paper and can be molded to erase small spaces.
I encourage you to draw every day! Try different pencils, papers and subjects. It will change how you see the world around you!

Do you have a favorite ART supply? I love my Prismacolor Pencils!
I created this page in my art journal that I showed you in yesterday’s post.
Dick Blick was offering a fabulous sale on the Prismacolor Pencils so I splurged! 🙂
I have MANY art supplies that I like but these color pencils are something I use often in combination with other art mediums such as watercolor.
I think they are one of my favorites because of their creamy, soft leads and they come in MANY colors! ❤️
Do you have a favorite art supply? I hope you tell me about it!

I wanted to share my process and tools I used to “catch” my fish from yesterday!
I started by selecting a background and decided to use this hot-press watercolor paper that I had painted with acrylics. I like the variegated colors:
I folded the paper into a simple journal and painted both sides so I have six different squares in a variety of background colors:
I cut simple shapes from my gelli-printed paper and glued them to the paper with Liquitex Matte Medium:
At this point, they look more like fall leaves than fish! So I added details with an Uni-ball Signo white gel pen and black micron pen:
Next, I added more details with Uni Posca paint pens – I just LOVE these opaque water based markers!! ❤️ I recently purchase a set of 15 colors with a medium tip from Amazon. They come in different sized tips and are sold in sets on Amazon or individually from Dick Blick (another item to add to that wish list!!)
I finished my page by adding some Prismacolor pencils – the Posca paint pens drew on top of color pencil too:
I predict I will be drawing more fish into my creative net with these Posca paint markers! I love that they are odorless, fade proof and bleed proof and can be used on almost any surface!
Have you ever experimented with these markers? I hope you share it with me!
Happy Fishing! 🙂
