Fall Flavors

I was in search of a recipe for Roasted Butternut Squash Soup the other day…

Normally, I’m not a huge squash fan but I was in the mood for something different and my neighbor gave me a Butternut Squash that I wanted to use.

In my online search, I discovered this wonderful food blog called, “Cookie and Kate,” Kate (Kathryne Taylor) cooks vegetarian meals while her dog, Cookie cleans up the crumbs!  🙂

I made the Roasted Butternut Squash soup last night – just love that gorgeous orange color, don’t you?

The soup was a bit bland for my taste so I added thyme, black pepper and Tabasco Sauce.  I tend to cook like I create… I rarely follow the recipe!  😉

While the Butternut squash was roasting in the oven, I tempted to watercolor the salad, a recipe I also found at CookieandKate.com

I LOVE the Fall flavors in the salad – BTW, I didn’t even taste the kale but you could substitute spinach.

You can find the recipe as Kale, Apple and Goat Cheese Salad with Granola Croutons.

I will be serving this salad for Thanksgiving dinner.  I like that I can limit the portion sizes to one or two servings or more – depending on how many people will be coming.

Hubby especially liked the Granola Croutons with oats, pecans, pumpkin and sunflower seeds:

I liked the easy Lemony Maple Mustand Salad Dressing too!

I enjoy trying new foods and recipes.  Kate has written a cookbook with colorful photos, called, “Love Real Food,”  I love cookbooks so I had to purchase it!  🙂

I eat at least one vegetarian meal each week, how about you?

If you give one of her recipes a try, I hope you share it with me!

Cheers! 🙂

Life’s Path

Some days I wonder where life is leading me…

IMG_3596

I wish it was as easy as “following the yellow brick road!”

IMG_3647

Yet, when I feel cloudy on the inside…

I know that God’s Son-shine will always give me hope for a new day!

Cheers Friends! 🙂

Autumn’s Display

My hubby and I closed our lake place this weekend as it is getting colder.  Autumn brings cooler temperatures in the Pacific Northwest where we call home.  Soon the snow will be falling…

Autumn’s Display of wild rose hips always dazzle me in the fall.  Especially on a sunny, blue-sky day:

It is always sad to see the lake season end as we will miss our lake friends. We will also miss the lake and this stunning view:

IMG_3416

Yet, I look forward to more time in my art studio in Autumn.

The crisp, cool air of October is Apple Harvest time too!

IMG_3486

This week my art these will be focusing on APPLES… I hope you stop by for a bite or two…

On Monday, I will share my process for creating this art piece.  (I also discovered some ways to “fix” mistakes that may be of interest to you!)

Do you have 4 seasons where you live?  What is your favorite time of year?

Cheers! 🙂

Bush Birds

I start noticing these birds in the fall when the leaves begin to change color…

IMG_3291

Sometimes it is difficult to tell the birds from the bushes but their long slender legs are what sets them apart.  Lol!

Happy Weird Bird Wednesday!

Cheers! 🙂

Clear Skies

We have been dealing with smoke from wild fires in our area for several weeks.  Not only do we have poor vision but the air quality has been awful!  This photo was taken last weekend at the lake:

IMG_3103

So we were thrilled to have a few drops of rain and wind to clear the skies this last weekend!

IMG_3197

Yesterday, we were able to enjoy a short boat ride and breathe in fresh air in clear skies.  It was wonderful to see blue sky and mountains again.  Hoorah! 😃

We noticed the air and water temperatures were cooler and leaves starting to change to autumn’s glorious show:

IMG_3194

It was so nice to enjoy the beauty around us again!  We hope that the firefighters are able to get control of fires around us so that the smoke stays away.  We still need rain badly.

Even the wild animals are hurting from the dry weather.  I found this wild bunny eating an apple from a neighbor’s tree.  The deer love the apples but I have never seen a bunny eat one!

Such bizarre weather this year, everywhere it seems…

Stay safe friends!

Cheers! 🙂

A Blue-Sky Day

It was a blue-sky kind of day at the lake yesterday.  The sun was shining, no wildfire smoke was in the air and we enjoyed a nice boat ride on smooth water!

Summer skies of blue,

 Filtered streams of sun light,

Fade into fall’s grasp:

Wishing you a blue-sky kind of relaxation wherever you are!

Feeling Fallish At The Lake

It started feeling a little like fall this last weekend at the lake.  Saturday was super hot with temperatures in the 90’s but Sunday, we finally got some rain!  Hoorah!!  We have been without rain for almost 45 days and it has been so hot and dry.  We need more precipitation but at least this helped clear away some smoke from wild fires our area.

There was a big drop in air temperature – almost 25 degrees.  We went swimming and I think the water was warmer than the 65 degree Fahrenheit air. 😉

When I think of fall, I think of golden yellow like this Common Tansy that seemed to be in bloom everywhere:

IMG_2877

And the color, brown like some of these leaves on this apple tree.   The deer will be eating their fill on them soon.  This single daisy in this photo on the right, seemed to be waving goodbye to summer!

Pearly Everlasting flowers were in bloom – these make excellent dried bouquets!

IMG_2879

And other leaves were starting to change to their golden yellow foliage:

IMG_2882

I discovered a rare patch of wild raspberries – oh, so sweet!  The end of summer fruit.  I hope to paint them in my nature journal soon.  🙂

IMG_2867

I don’t know the name of these white berries… possibly they are snowberries?  I know they aren’t edible:

IMG_2869

Snowberries are members of the honeysuckle family and start appearing in late summer.

How do you notice the change of seasons in fall?  What is your favorite season?  I hope you share it with me!  🍂

Cheers! 🙂

Autumn’s Memory Fades

I was inspired by Jodi at The Creative Life In Between to create this haiku for today.

Bare branches reaching,

Outstretched arms towards the sun,

Autumn’s memory fades…

img_8749

Days become shorter,

Frosty fingers leave their mark,

Freezing seed heads droop.

img_8656

Colors change from gold,

Paperlike flowers pressed,

Winter’s icy breath.

Wishing you a Sunny Sunday, friends!

Cheers!  🙂

Around The Bend

I have made progress to my doodle I started last week.  Here is where I left off:

img_8514

I was having fun doodling all the twists and turns so I had to add a few more to my design:

img_8562

It’s almost done!  Next I will add color…

img_8567

Sometimes life is like this doodle, I can’t wait to see what is just around the bend!  I’m looking forward to taking a couple of new online art classes that I will share with you next week.

What are you looking forward to?  I’d love to hear from you!

Wishing you a Sunny Sunday, friends!!  🙂

Perhaps you will find a little time to enjoy nature’s beauty around the bend or backyard like these photos I recently took:

Birch Tree Inspired

I remember the big white Paper Birch tree that my parents planted in their front yard.  As kids, we took its lovely shade and beautiful white bark for granted.  It was a shame when it became diseased and had to be chopped down.

I planted a River Birch in my yard a few years ago.  It is supposed to be more resistant to disease.  It has a light pink bark that peels.  I love how it dances in the wind like yesterday when I snapped this photo.  It’s leaves are starting to change from green to gold and look dazzling against this brilliant blue sky:

image

It was my inspiration to play with patterns in one of my sketchbooks.

I started with loose sketches of leaves in Neocolors (water soluble crayons) and then painted yellow india ink over the leaves.  I also added a blue background with the india ink – using Dr. Ph. Martin’s colored ink.  I have never “painted” ink on before – how fun!

image

I finished it by gluing some of my Gelli-printed deli paper on top with a glue stick:

It was very relaxing to just “play” and I encourage you to give it a try!  🙂

Did you have a favorite tree when you were a child?  I’d love to hear about it!

Happy Experimenting!  🙂
