One of the highlights during the month of December is the special music…
Last weekend, I heard a trumpet solo and today at church, I listened to a violin soloist.
I like to close my eyes and listen, it brings my heart JOY!
What special music do YOU enJOY during the month of December?
I hope you share it with me.

I have found new JOY with pencil sketching lately.
It has become a relaxing activity in the evening and my day does not feel complete without a quick sketch!
I find myself focusing on faces yet I am also “drawn” to nature.
This woodland fairy combines a face and nature into one sketch:
My inspiration came from the cover of this book and an oak tree in my yard:
It is one of my favorite books for learning to sketch and paint fairies. It has so many wonderful ideas to spark my imagination!
These are the supplies I used for this drawing:
From top of the page to bottom: A Faber-Castell Graphite Aquarelle 8B pencil, Pentel waterbrush, Pentel Graphlet 0.7 mm mechanical pencil, shading stump and a kneaded eraser. I used a Stillman & Birn Zeta Series sketchbook.
I started with the Graphite Aquarelle pencil and added shading with the waterbrush. I finished adding details with the 0.7 mm mechanical pencil and shading stump. A kneaded eraser is wonderful because it doesn’t damage the paper and can be molded to erase small spaces.
I encourage you to draw every day! Try different pencils, papers and subjects. It will change how you see the world around you!

I’ve been enjoying time off from blogging and working on my Alphabet Journal. You can read more about my project here: Creating A Recipe Of Fun…
I am posting “an alphabetical recipe” with watercolor each day on Instagram but I have gotten a bit behind on the collage part…
Today, I decided to jump ahead to the letter, “J”:
Letter “J” is for creating art with JOY of course!
I had fun drawing this illustration, painting it in watercolor and adding an abstract collage.
I will post my letters “E” through “I” when I add collage to them.
I hope you are all well…

I remember being told to be still, Jill when I was a child! Oh, is that possible? Lol! 😉
Maybe if I was given a crayon and an assignment to draw!
I started a new online class this week with Lynn Whipple – hosted by Carla Sonheim, called, “The Essence of Still Life.”
Lynn brings such positive energy to her classes. I know I will learn so much!
I hope you enjoyed these colorful drawings I did!
They were super fun with water soluble crayons!

The Dreaming Zebra Foundation is a (501)(c)(3) charity providing support so that children and young adults are given an equal opportunity to explore and develop their creativity in the arts.
How did Dreaming Zebra™ get its name?
||The answer is that every zebra is unique, just as every child is one of a kind! Zebras are black, with white stripes that are as individual as fingerprints. At Dreaming Zebra, our mission is to encourage children to embrace their individuality, to express themselves creatively, and to follow their artistic dreams. Hence the name, Dreaming Zebra!
The Dreaming Zebra Foundation was incorporated in Portland, Oregon in the interest of promoting greater access to the arts for children and young adults. Our founders recognized a pressing need in many communities for the promotion of charitable donations of art and music supplies to support individuals, schools, and other nonprofit organizations serving youth and the arts.
Core to our identity is the belief that all children, regardless of their financial circumstances, should have access to art education. As a public charity powered by volunteers, this belief drives all that we do.
The Dreaming Zebra Foundation’s supporters share a common passion for education, the environment, and community, and as such, we are able to connect the synergies between those who support the arts and those in need.
I am so thankful to have ART to express my creative JOY!
I hope you join me in sharing this gift of expression by giving to the Dreaming Zebra Foundation.
All it takes is one dream to make a difference!!

If I was to describe my art journey in seven words today… I’d say; “Creating art with JOY makes me happy!” 🙂
How would you describe your creative journey in seven words? And if it isn’t where you want it to be in your life – maybe write it as YOU envision it!!

I haven’t done one of these abstracts in awhile. I find them very meditative to do. I did this one on Sunday while watching the Oscars.
I started with several layers of watercolor on 140 lb hot press paper:
Next, I outline shapes I see when the paint changes color with a black Micron .01 pen:
It is very meditative to choose which shapes I want to include:
This time, I left some shapes without outlines:
I think it gives the eyes time to rest. You can choose to see individual shapes or the big picture.
I want to try using an actual photo as a reference for my next one.

Life doesn’t always turn out as planned… Yet, I do believe how “I” react makes a BIG difference.
I created these patterns in color pencils on black paper with the thought of throwing rocks into water:
And afterwards watching the ripples of my actions spread…
When life gives me lemons, do I spread joy or anger?! The choice is mine.

I drew this Angel with black ink and a dip pen on hot press watercolor paper:
Added a light watercolor wash and a bird on her wing:
Finished with color pencils:
She says: Sing Joy… Give Love…Be Kind
Wishing you a Sunny Sunday, Friends! 🙂
