A Paper Mosaic Mask

I had fun experimenting with this Gelli-Plate print which is the same pattern as the prints I showed you last week, here: Making Masks!

This one is a little different as I cut out the negative features of the face for the print:

Next, I added patterns with Posca paint pens, color pencils and a Uniball Signo white gel pen to create a design for my mask:

I finished by cutting my paper into squares and slightly shifting the image before gluing it onto another piece of paper:

My paper mosaic mask was a fun surprise!  What do you think?

Wishing you a happy Monday!

Your Handwriting As Art – Part 1

Last weekend, I had fun using my handwriting to create collage papers.  I learned this technique from Carla Sonheim in her online class:  365 Daily Creative Practice.

I enjoyed taking the lesson a step further and make it my own.  I started by using watercolor paper that I had previously painted.  The colors reminded me of the beach so I started writing about my memories of the ocean and the lake:

I used a black Micron .01 pen, a Uniball white and blue gel pen and a pencil.  I like the texture it created.

Next, I started with a white piece of 140 lb hot press watercolor paper.  I started writing my thoughts with an orange and blue gel pen, added watercolor on top in stripes, added more writing with a black Pentel pen, added Tombow markers, more watercolor, then a blue and a green Posca pen.  I just love how the layers give it a pattern:

My next one, I used a similar process as above, except I added a gold metallic pen and I started writing messier… Super fun to write MESSY!!

In both of these, I kept turning my paper a quarter turn as I wrote.

My last experiment, I used an old advertisement in a magazine for a girdle and wrote over it with a white gel pen and a Sharpie fine black pen:

For the above piece, I wrote about my memories of girdles… thank goodness we don’t wear these anymore!! 😉

I discovered that part of the fun in creating these papers for collage is the writing.

Tomorrow, in Part 2, I will show you ideas that may inspire you to use your own handwriting in your art.

Cheers! 🙂

One Tough Old Bird

I decided to change things up today and create a weird bird with scraping paint, like the technique I showed you previously, here: Scraping Paint…

And I wrote a Limerick:

There once was an old bird from Bend,

Whose wild hair stood up on end,

She did have some charm,

With hens on the farm,

Who crowned her Queen of Hair Trends!

Happy Weird Bird Wednesday!

May your hair look fabulous today!

Cheers! 🙂

Scraping Paint…

No, I’m not refinishing any furniture or painting walls…

I’m scraping acrylic paint using an old credit card on Canson mixed media paper:

And adding Posca paint pens…

I learned this technique recently from Carla Sonheim.

And then I took it a step further:

Yep, I added bubble wrap and the above texture tool to create; Three Pomegranates:

One experiment led to another…

And I discovered that I could use bubble wrap like a stamp… dipping it into the paint and then adding it to the paper.  If I let the wet paint partially dry, and scraped fresh paint across, it gave a wonderful resist.

A close-up in the second photo below:

I layered several colors in each of these experiments with Golden’s Fluid Acrylic Paints.  I also experimented by adding some gold iridescent paint.

I liked the end result of scraping an old credit card across my paper.  It created an unsuspected surprise!

Yesterday, I experimented with a more abstract design:

All my papers are 11×14 inches in size.  They will make wonderful collage materials!

Who knows where tomorrow’s art experiment will take me?!

Thank YOU for joining me in my art studio today!

Cheers! 🙂

A Paint Pen Fish Doodle

I started a new doodle with the paint pens by scribbling some colors on the art journal I showed you yesterday.

I wasn’t exactly sure what I was going to do but it was super fun to just play:

I used the Posca paint pens in colors of  light gray, yellow and light green.  It is interesting how the colors change depending on the time of day!

I just started doodling with a black Micron pen and these fish appeared:

So I went with the flow of it…  If I made a mistake with the black ink, I could easily cover it up with a paint pen!  🙂

I discovered that the black ink takes a little longer to dry over the acrylic painted surface so it can easily smear if you aren’t careful.

This is like a puzzle for me to solve as I search for fish and create patterns:

I added a few more lines with the paint pen to create another fish.  Can you find it hidden in the picture above the other two fish?

I will post my completed fish doodle next week.

Cheers! 🙂
