A Game Changer

I am very excited about Carla Sonheim’s year-long online class for 2020!

It is called, “Words and Pictures.”

For the first assignment, I used the phrase, “This might be impossible to read but it was fun to make,” using a game theme:

I am hoping this class will be a game changer for me and help me write a children’s book!

It’s A Splash!

I have been doing these mini collages in my art journal that start by glueing a piece of paper randomly on a page and then going back and adding to it until it feels like it is done.

It reminds me of solving a puzzle.

Here is one I just started:

I hope to show you how I complete it next week!

The one below, I started with the brown piece of kraft paper that I previously printed on the Gelli plate:

I added the tree and then got the idea to add the image of a child and a growth chart.

I started with the gray image from a magazine underneath the “water circus” image for this one:

From there, I added the buoy paper, etc.  I finished it with the rubber stamped letters to balance out the fish.

It IS a splash to create collage this way!! I hope you give me a try and tell me what you think!

The Unexpected

I think one of the things I enjoy about creating collage art is the element of surprise or the unexpected like this one:

The assignment in The Collage Workbook By Randel Plowman for week four is Color Charge.  He says; “Experiment with adding color to a collage that is primarily black and white.  A few subtle strokes and bright marks can make a subdued collage really pop.”

In the above 6×6 inch collage, the postage stamp gives a pop of color as does the gelli-prints.  It also helps direct the eye throughout the piece.

In my next one on a 4×6 inch index card, I tried to add pink to make you think of lipstick shades.  The large pink circle is from a paper napkin.  I think it adds balance to the collage.

My last 6×6 inch collage is more simple and yet the red paint circles make you look at the whole collage and find something hidden:

Collage is a lot like a puzzle for me.  How can I help you look further and discover the unexpected?
