On The Tip Of Their Bill?

Today’s weird bird has an unusually shaped beak! What would YOU name this bird?

This got me thinking about bird beaks… and how do REAL birds taste their food?

Did you know that birds have a well-developed sense of taste and experience all four of the main tastes that humans do? (Sweet, sour, bitter and salty)

Humans taste with their tongues but birds generally have their taste buds on the roof and floor of their mouth. Many have at least a few taste buds close to the tip of their tongue bill so they can make a quick assessment of a food item as soon as they pick it up.

I learned these interesting facts from this bird book I recently purchased:

I’m hoping this book will help me draw and learn more about REAL birds this year!

Happy Weird Bird Wednesday!

Off The Grid…

In 2019, I created a “square a day” – a small piece of art each day. This was a fun project that kept me inspired in my art making. I wrote the date and notes on the back of each square.

I have been a little off the grid in the last year dealing with some health issues and feeling uninspired to create.

2022 is a NEW YEAR and time to create some fun! Hooray!

Today’s weird bird was part of my square project for the head and yesterday, I added the body with a grid format…

Here is what I wrote on the back of my square in 2019:

And here is my box of 365 art squares!

I hope my little whimsy will give you a smile today…

Happy Weird Bird Wednesday!

Cheers to a creative year for us all! πŸ™‚

A Jolly Old Elf…

This weird bird decided to dress up for the Holidays!

I’m sure Santa needs all the help he can get this time of year…

Happy Weird Bird Wednesday!

May your Holidays be filled with laughter and good cheer!

A Tweedle Twaddle Bird

Yes, I’m back….

I took a little longer blogging break than I intended but I’m back! And with another weird bird!

Today’s weird bird is a combination of two dictionary words:

TWEEDLE: To lure by or as by music

TWADDLE: Trivial or silly talk/writing

Of course, I put my own spin on these two words to create this weird bird:

I hope this Tweedle Twaddle bird gives you a smile today!

A Nudnik Bird

Today’s weird bird is rather dull…

It is a Nudnik bird!

Nudnik (nood-nik) – a persistently dull, boring pest.

Sometimes I feel like my weird birds are a little boring or maybe I just need a break from creating them for awhile.

So I have decided to take a blogging break and enjoy the lake for the summer.

A Bibliopole Bird

Today’s weird bird is collaged with old books.

So I thought a fitting title is a Bibliopole bird:

The dictionary definition for Bibliopole (bib-lee-uh-pohl) – a bookseller, especially a dealer in rare or used books.

I enjoy reading during summer…

Have you read any good books lately?

Wild Background

I like to sketch REAL birds every now and then…

These quick sketches inspired today’s hat wearing weird bird:

I like how the wild background makes the pencil sketch stand out.

What do you think?

On a sad note, I recently had to say goodbye to my sweet kitty, Jack who I have blogged about in several posts.

This picture shows Jack lying on the dried Catmint in our yard. One of his favorite spots to soak up the sunshine!

Jack is no longer in pain but I miss him a great deal. Always hard to loose a furry friend.

Weird Birds

This pattern has been showing up a lot in my journal:

I usually fill in the shape with collage paper scraps like this one:

I decided to try making a weird bird with this shape. I colored it with Copic markers and added a few doodles.

Here is the first one:

I had so much fun, I created a second one:

And a third one!

One never knows where the NEXT weird bird idea will come from!

Old Geyser

Today’s weird bird is sometimes confused with an old Geezer bird…

But this one is definitely an Old Geyser!

Spotted Quail

I spotted a Quail in my yard the other day. I just love watching them skitter across the yard always on the look out for my cat!

Today’s weird bird resembles a Quail:

Perhaps it is a Spotted Quail?

Did you know the little apostrophe on top of both male and female‘s heads is called a plume or topknot? The male’s plume is more pronounced.
