Do you ever drive by your old neighborhood where you grew up? I do from time to time. I was raised only about 30 minutes from my current home.
I created this short story from the art I did in an old book, as part of the “Word Play Painting Class” I took online from Lynn Whipple.
It was a cool fall day in late October when Ellen decided to take a short drive –
Past the home where she was raised in the old neighborhood –
The new owner had changed the house color but everything else looked much the same.
Ellen remembered her childhood friends and all the times they went “Trick or Treating” in the neighborhood –
Dressing up in handmade costumes of cats, ghosts and little old ladies…
Ellen was about ready to drive away when the lady next door came outside to get her mail. Ellen was surprised to recognize her neighbor, Dee Dee – as she thought she had moved away –
Ellen hopped out of her car and waived hello to Dee Dee! When Dee Dee saw Ellen, she broke into a wide grin.
They started chatting and Dee Dee invited Ellen into her home for a cup of coffee –
Reruns of the show, “Super Cat” were playing on the television (rather loudly I must say) so Ellen was thankful when Dee Dee turned the volume off –
As Ellen sat down on the couch, the phone rang. Dee Dee was answering the phone, when Ellen noticed a ______ in the room! (Now it’s your turn to help complete Part 1 of the story in a clean, humorous way). I hope you play along…
I will post my ending to the story in Part 2 next week!
Happy Storytelling! 🙂

Word Play Painting Class sounds like one cool class to take if you’re creative with both words and pictures!
I think Ellen noticed a little dancing statue of the god Vishnu! 🙂

That little ghost is adorable.
And what did she see? a parrot (chance for some interesting dialogue…)

…a big hairy spider? Cute illustrations. They reminded me of the drawing in the Madeline books.

Hahaha! I like your ending, Nancy! Reminds me of the spider that Charlie at Doodlewash posted yesterday on his blog! 😉 And thank you for your nice compliment! 🙂

Yike! I forgot about that. Charlie’s spider was too good! It creeped me out. I guess that is why I had spiders on the brain.

“Bird in the room!” Of course! I just visited my old street last week, so this strikes home. I love Dee Dee and the cat!

Yes! Everyone needs a bird! Thanks Cynthia for playing along! 💜 Glad to hear that I’m not the only one who likes to visit where they grew up. 😊

Oh, this is so fun! Love that you used an old book too…beautiful kind of recycling, reusing! Ads even more character to an artist that exudes character!! xoxo

Thanks Rebecca! I would never have thought to create IN a book without this class. I did not have any characters in mind when I did these, they just sort of magically appeared. And then I wrote a story about them. 😊 So fun! xo

I see you are still having great fun in your class! That’s awesome.
I think she saw a “Waldo” in the the room! After all, he’s been quite difficult to find for a very long time so seeing him hanging out at Dee Dee’s was quite a wonderful discovery. After having searched high and low for him since she was a small child, it was amazing to her that he had been living next door to her the whole time and she never knew!! Of course, he was pretty easy to spot right there in the middle of Dee Dee’s white shag carpet–his red-striped shirt and blue pants making him quite difficult to miss. Ellen waved and Waldo waved back with a really big grin on his face, his glasses reflecting the light jumping wildly from the TV screen…
Yes. I quite enjoyed writing my little story! You KNOW that Dee Dee HAS to have some kind of SHAG carpet in her living room! She just looks like she would. Hee hee!

Great ending, Jill!!! Happy to hear Waldo has FINALLY been found! LOL! And Dee Dee does look like she would have shag carpet and perhaps some macrame plant hangers too… Hehe! 😊😊😊
